Are Your Mattress And Bedframe Killing You With EMF?
by Lloyd Alter, Toronto on 08. 2.10

The Robinsons model the latest in tinfoil pyjamas
Forget the tinfoil hat, it is time for tinfoil pyjamas. Scientific American tells us that the bed frames and box springs in most American beds are half the wavelength of TV and FM signals and are acting as antennae, causing skin and breast cancers on victims’ left sides, which are usually right were the maximum strength of the EMF would be.

How to make a tinfoil hat: instructions here
R. Douglas Fields, Ph. D, writes in Scientific American about the Swedish study by Örjan Hallberg of Hallberg Independent Research in Sweden and Olle Johansson of The Karolinska Institute in Sweden, that describes the effect:
As we sleep on our coil-spring mattresses, we are in effect sleeping on an antenna that amplifies the intensity of the broadcast FM/TV radiation. Asleep on these antennas, our bodies are exposed to the amplified electromagnetic radiation for a third of our life spans. As we slumber on a metal coil-spring mattress, a wave of electromagnetic radiation envelops our bodies so that the maximum strength of the field develops 75 centimeters above the mattress in the middle of our bodies. When sleeping on the right side, the body’s left side will thereby be exposed to field strength about twice as strong as what the right side absorbs.
The author notes that the rate of breast cancer in Japan is a lot lower than in the west, and attributes this to the fact that they do not sleep on mattresses, and their TVs operate on a different frequency.
A commenter at Apartment Therapy noted that study co-author Ollie Johansson was awarded the Misleader of the Year Award in 2004 for his work in EMF. The citation includes:
Olle Johansson receives the award as one of the most prominent representatives of the far too many scientists who, to draw attention to themselves and funding for their own activities, disseminate worry among the public in mass media by presenting unsubstantiated hypotheses as established facts…..Olle Johansson insinuates that a large number of diseases such as cancer, blood pressure problems, asthma, allergies and sleep disorders, may be caused by electromagnetic fields. He has also come to the conclusion that malignant melanomas may be caused by TV- and FM-transmissions. A few years ago Johansson received particular attention after he claimed that brain damage, and specifically mad cow disease could be caused by the use of mobile phones.
But then again, everyone is just so certain whenever we write about the possible dangers of EMF, that all those cellphone towers and cellphones, microwave ovens and electric blankets, not to mention routers and wifi are perfectly harmless. How can they be so sure?

Texts or Toilets? More People In India Have Access to Cell Phones than Bathrooms
by Jaymi Heimbuch, San Francisco, California on 04.15.10
Photo via Sustainable Sanitation
We know that access to cell phones is skyrocketing in developing nations, with areas in India and Africa simply leapfrogging from no phones to cell phones and skipping land lines altogether. It’s a shift from no technology to new technology. Cell phones are simply becoming a basic necessity for daily living. But meanwhile another basic necessity is too often out of reach – access to sanitation services. A new report states that more people in India have access to a cell phone than to a toilet.
Eurekalerts points us to a report from UN experts, which shows that roughly 366 million people – or 31% of the population – had access to improved sanitation in 200, while 545 million cell phones are now connected to service in India. About 45 of every 100 people can pick up a cell phone whenever they need. It’s not the case when it comes to sanitary bathrooms, however.
The statistics are meant to highlight the lack of sanitation services in developing nations, and bring attention to a new 9-point prescription for achieving the world’s Millennium Development Goal (MDG) for sanitation by 2015.
Worldwide, around 1.1 billion people defecate in the open, according to the report. Yet progress in creating access to toilets and sanitation lags far behind world MDG targets, even as mobile phone connections continue to a predicted 1 billion in India by 2015. When the statistics are set side by side, it’s hard to ignore the seemingly backward priorities.
Zafar Adeel, Director of United Nations University’s Canada-based think-tank for water, the Institute for Water, Environment and Health, states, “It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, about half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet.”
Adeel points out that education about the problems of poor sanitation is needed, and simply having a toilet can do more to save lives and improve health than any alternative investment.
The new report shows that the price of a new toilet is around $300, and an esitmated $358 billion is needed to reach the 2015 goal for worldwide sanitation. It might seem like a large investment, but consider the reduced health costs, reduced pollution, and globally raised standard of living:
“The world can expect, however, a return of between $3 and $34 for every dollar spent on sanitation, realized through reduced poverty and health costs and higher productivity — an economic and humanitarian opportunity of historic proportions,” adds Dr. Adeel, who also serves as chair of UN-Water, a coordinating body for water-related work at 27 UN agencies and their many global partners.
While progress is being made, the World Health Organization and UNICEF predict that we will probably still be short of the goal, with 2.7 billion people lacking access to sanitation in 5 years. While toilets are not as interesting or spotlighted as cell phones and the communication power of texting, the need to talk about the subject is dire.
“This report notes cultural taboos surround this issue in some countries, preventing progress,” says Zafar Adeel, Director of UNU-INWEH. “Anyone who shirks the topic as repugnant, minimizes it as undignified, or considers unworthy those in need should let others take over for the sake of 1.5 million children and countless others killed each year by contaminated water and unhealthy sanitation.”
To reach the goal, the report makes 9 recommendations, including making sanitation a primary focus in water management talks, empowerment around sanitation needs in communities, redefining “acceptable” sanitation access, and designing new business models for dealing with the water-sanitation-hygene triangle, among others.
Says report co-author Corinne Shuster-Wallace of UNU-INWEH: “Sanitation for all is not only achievable, but necessary. There is a moral, civil, political and economic need to bring adequate sanitation to the global population.”

Please, find enclosed part II of Phil Dobbie’s radio program “Twisted Wire”, “Is your mobile phone killing you”:
http://www.zdnet.com.au/are-mobile-phones-killing-our-grandchildren-339301883.htm
“On last week’s program we asked whether exposure to your mobile phone is increasing your risk of contracting cancer or having a brain tumour. The jury is out on that question, with the scientific community divided and no conclusive proof either way.
Yet no proof has been translated as “no risk” in many quarters.
The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) admitted its terminology was misleading and corrected the wording on its website after last week’s program.
AMTA has re-worded its website from saying there was “no public health risk” to now say “there is no established evidence of health effects”.
This week we hear again from Lloyd Morgan, the retired electronics engineer, who has questioned the methods used by the multinational Interphone study, including selection bias, insufficient latency time, and the exclusion of children and young adults. In fact, some people were excluded from the study because they had a brain tumour and were too ill to be interviewed!
In Cellphones and Brain Tumors: 15 Reasons for Concern, he points to Interphone research that shows that using a mobile phone actually protects you from a brain tumour.
Does that sound like a credible finding?
We also hear more from Olle Johansson, an associate professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm. You’ll recall that in last week’s program he said that cancer and brain tumour might be the least of our worries. There could be other effects that are far more detrimental. The way he argues the case you have to seriously wonder whether he has a point.
Have a listen and tell us what you think. Are we blindly leading ourselves into the unknown?”

Electrohypersensitivity (EHS) Mechanisms audio
submitted by Dr. Andrew Goldsworthy via Angela Flynn
Hello all:
I gave a talk on the mechanisms by which electro hyper-sensitivity symptoms occur, at a meeting of about 100 EHS sufferers last Saturday.
It was held at the Head Office of Samworth Bros (Makers of Ginster’s pies and many supermarket own-brand ready-meals) whose CEO has severe EHS and had a special EMF-free room constructed for the purpose.
A recording of it can be found at http://electrosensitivityuk.podbean.com/ . Please feel free to pass the link on to anyone you think may be interested.
Best wishes

Honeybees face towering threat from mobiles
Radiation from transmitters wipes out bee colonies which will affect food production: Study
by VR Jayaraj | Kochi
Studies in Kerala have brought out evidence to support the theory of colony collapse disorder (CCD) among honeybees due to bioactive microwave radiation from mobile phones and their relay towers, which leads to extensive disappearance of entire worker bee colonies. This could result in disruption in food production because most of the crops depend on bees for pollination.
Although the theory of mobile towers leading to CCD is yet to be proved anywhere in the world, experts say this is highly possible and the phenomenon could cause unimaginable food troubles to most Indian States, especially Kerala which is already food-scarce. The State has the highest density of mobile towers.
The phenomenon of (suspected) mobile tower-induced CCD and resultant crop loss were first noticed in the US several years ago, but this had spread to most European countries by 2007. Now, experiments by Sainuddeen Pattazhy, a researcher and dean in the department of zoology at SN College, Punalur, Kerala, have found that worker bees fail to return to their hives when their navigation skills are interfered by the mobile microwaves.
Sainuddeen had conducted his experiments by placing mobile phones near beehives (as some scientists in the West had done earlier). He found that these hives collapsed totally in five to 10 days with the worker bees failing to return to their homes, leaving the hives with the queens, eggs and immature bees. The vanished bees were never found, but the assumption was that they died singly far from home. The parasites, wildlife and other bees that normally raid the honey and pollen left behind when a colony dies, refuse to go anywhere near the abandoned hives.
“The navigation skill of the worker bees is dependent on the earth’s magnetic properties. The electro-magnetic waves emitted by the mobile phones and relay towers interfere with the earth’s magnetism, resulting in the loss of the navigation capacity of the bee. Then it fails to come back. Also, the radiation causes damage to the nervous system of the bee and it becomes unable to fly,” said Sainuddeen.
The researcher had earlier led a study on the impact of mobile phones and towers on ecology, in which other environmentalists had participated. The study revealed that bioactive radiations from mobile towers threatened the very existence of home sparrow, which lived in colonies close to human habitats, even in crowded cities.
Pattazhy, however, is not the first scientist to notice the phenomenon of CCD occurring in bees due to mobile phone-tower proximity. A limited study at Landau University in 2007, headed by Dr Jochen Kuhn, had found that bees refused to return to their hives when mobile phones were placed nearby. As back as in late 1990s, a researcher, George Carlo, had headed a massive study sponsored by the US Government and the mobile phone industry in America, had said, “I am convinced that the possibility is real.”
Apiarists in Idukki, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Wayanad districts confirm that they have been noticing the massive play of CCD for the past four or five years, but they have never thought of the relation between mobile tower-induced radiations and their bees.
A beekeeper in Thodupuzha, Idukki said he had lost 13 of his 17 hives in the past three years. Three years ago, three mobile towers were erected on the hillock near his farm.
“But I have never thought of the relation. I, like other farmers, was thinking that climatic changes and pesticides used in the rubber plantations were the reason,” he said.
Scientists warn that Kerala, which already has a large number of mobiles and towers, could face not just CCD-created hive losses but even a crop disaster if the mobile craze continues to grow.
“Honeybees can be wiped out in Kerala and many other Indian States and cities if there is no system to control the unscientific increase in the use of mobile phones. It can in turn lead to a disaster in the food front as bees are responsible for pollination in most of the food crops,” said a biotechnologist at a Coimbatore college.
